Mom’s eyes filled with tears, her gaze meeting Malachi’s. “Where’s Gerard? His voice sounded so tired, and now he’s not answering me.”

“He’s still with Lucien in the Cathedral. He needs a little boost, so send him your love. Gerard’s only half demon and the Cathedral won’t hurt him like it would a full-blood. It will only drain his demon side. When he returns with Lucien, he’ll bounce back to his normal crabby self,” Malachi explained.

“What’s the Cathedral?” Willow asked.

“It’s an ancient place of peace and serenity where all religions used to gather.” Niki’s voice sounded stronger than it had a few moments before. “But when Christianity appeared, the Papacy decreed all other beliefs evil without trying to understand them. Including demons. As Christianity spread, the Papacy’s power grew until we couldn’t enter the Cathedral without subjugation. We were denounced as bogeymen, the evil in Christian beliefs.”

I scowled. “Subju-what?”

Niki kissed the end of my nose while smoothing the furrow I could sense had formed between my eyes. “We were forced to submit, and our powers were stripped from us. If we stay too long in the Cathedral, we die.”

I stared at my mother, horror and outrage pouring through me. “That’s no different from being raped and tortured. Now I know why we never went to church.” My nostrils flared as I pinched my lips together in disgust. “How can people be so stupid?”

She sighed. “Not stupid, Johnna. Naïve. Ignorant, really. Christianity is a baby religion compared to the others. They’re still in the Dark Ages. Not literally, of course, but figuratively. Those were dark times when superstition and prejudices hindered their understanding. Unfortunately, those attributes still exist because humans haven’t evolved beyond what they can’t visualize or understand.” She patted the bed and I moved to sit beside her. “Like Willow, you are not human. Your father and I didn’t want to confuse you by attending human places of worship. It would be like a twenty-first century scientist using first-century methods for their experiments.”
